Exterior cleaning and restoration that doesn't damage what it cleans
Steward & Stone is an Essex exterior restoration business. We remove graffiti, paint and decades of grime from brick, stone and render, and we do it without stripping the surface underneath.
Why we do it differently
Most exterior cleaners own a pressure washer and hope for the best.
Blast the wrong surface with too much pressure and you've etched the brick, driven water into the joints and made the problem permanent.
We work with a DOFF steam system, which uses superheated water at low pressure. It lifts dirt, algae and graffiti without gouging soft brick or lime mortar. It’s widely used for sensitive heritage and conservation cleaning, and it allows us to work on surfaces that would be vulnerable to aggressive pressure washing.
Our DOFF work is backed by Stonehealth contractor training and both PureSeal Approved Applicator modules: Module 1 on driveway and stone restoration, and Module 2 on render, buildings and structures. Both cover surface identification, choosing the right method and chemistry, COSHH assessments, and risk assessments and method statements. Both are NEBOSH Endorsed and City & Guilds Assured.
I'm an Aussie who started Steward & Stone in 2023 to work with England's history up close. It's taken me from Essex, Suffolk and Norfolk to the Kent coast at Ramsgate, Broadstairs and Dover, up through Lincolnshire to Nottingham and Sheffield, and down to Eastbourne and the edge of the New Forest. The buildings and the people have been the best part.

What we do
- Graffiti removal: tags and paint removed from brick, stone, render and concrete, with the surface left intact
- DOFF cleaning: low-pressure steam cleaning for delicate and historic surfaces
- Brick cleaning: dirt, algae, staining and weathering removed using surface-appropriate methods
- Paint removal: stripping paint from masonry without damaging it
- Stone cleaning: dirt, biological growth and staining lifted from natural stone
- Driveways and patios: cleaned and, where it makes sense, sealed

Who you'll deal with
You deal with me, start to finish.
I'm Dan, the owner. I'll assess your property, tell you what I'd do and why, and give you a quote.
Where photographs are enough to assess the work, we can usually do that remotely; where a site visit makes sense, I'll arrange one. When the job's booked, I'm the one who turns up with the machine and does the work.
There's no sales rep, no handover to a crew you've never met, and no one to chase when you have a question.
On brick and stone that matters, because a wrong call on method or chemical can't be undone. The person who assessed your surface is the person holding the lance.
Quotes are free. If a job doesn't need doing, or a gentler option will do, I'll tell you.
Every surface is different
Victorian brick, soft lime mortar, sandstone and modern concrete all react differently to heat, pressure and chemistry, so the first job is working out what we're dealing with.
From there we pick the gentlest method that will do the job. For most brick and stone that means DOFF steam, which lifts dirt, algae and graffiti without gouging the surface. Where a chemical is needed, we choose one to suit the material rather than the strongest one available.
We work to a proper risk assessment and method statement, so you know what's going on your building and how.
The aim is simple: a building that looks like itself again, not one that's been scrubbed to within an inch of its life.
