Natural stone needs to be cleaned according to the type of stone, its condition and what is causing the staining.
Sandstone and limestone are porous and can be softened, etched or permanently marked by aggressive pressure or unsuitable chemicals.
We assess the stone, mortar joints and surface contamination before deciding how to clean it.
For much of our stone cleaning work, we use the DOFF Integra steam cleaning system, which uses superheated water at low pressure to remove general dirt, algae, moss and biological growth without abrasive blasting.
Where steam alone is not enough, we can use targeted treatments for specific problems such as heavy carbon staining, rust, biological growth or other ingrained contamination. The method is chosen to suit the stone rather than forcing the same treatment onto every surface.

Natural Stone Cleaning That Protects the Surface
Natural stone is not one material. Sandstone, limestone, granite and slate all behave differently, and their condition can vary enormously depending on age, exposure, previous repairs and the type of mortar around them.
Porous stone can hold dirt, moisture, algae and atmospheric staining deep within the surface, while aggressive pressure or unsuitable chemicals can permanently alter the colour, texture or face of the stone.

Before we begin, we assess the stone type, its condition, the mortar joints and what is causing the staining. We test a small area first, then choose the cleaning method and settings to suit the masonry.
Different Stone Needs a Different Approach
Sandstone and limestone are generally more porous and can be particularly vulnerable to erosion, surface loss and chemical damage if they are cleaned too aggressively. Harder stones such as granite may tolerate a different approach, but joints, repairs and surrounding materials still need to be considered.
The type of contamination matters just as much as the stone itself. Biological growth, general dirt, carbon staining, rust, mortar residue and previous treatments can all require different methods.

DOFF steam cleaning is suitable for much general soiling and biological growth, while more persistent staining may require a targeted specialist treatment. The aim is always to use the least aggressive method capable of achieving the required result.
Clean Stone Should Still Look Like Stone
The aim is not to make old stone look artificially new.
Natural stone develops colour variation, weathering, tooling marks and surface character over time. On historic buildings in particular, those variations are part of the appearance of the masonry and should not simply be stripped away in pursuit of a uniform finish.
Good cleaning should remove unwanted dirt, staining and biological growth while preserving the natural colour and texture of the stone beneath.

What We Treat on Brick
Algae, Moss and Lichen
Green and black growth on north-facing and shaded walls. We remove it and, if you want, apply a biocide to slow it coming back.
Pollution and Carbon Staining
Decades of traffic pollution and chimney smoke can turn brick dark grey or black. DOFF steam removes general soiling and lighter carbon. Heavy, ingrained carbon staining may need specialist chemical-assisted cleaning (see Cleaning Methods below).
Efflorescence
The white, powdery mineral salt deposits that appear on new and older brickwork. We can treat the surface. Because efflorescence comes from moisture moving through the wall, we will also tell you honestly if it is likely to return.
Rust and Iron Staining
Orange or brown marks from fixings, railings, gutters and old ironwork. Targeted treatments, tested first.

Cleaning Methods for Brick
DOFF Steam Cleaning
Superheated water at low pressure lifts dirt, algae and general staining without abrasives. Our starting point for most brick, and the safest choice for old or soft brick.
Biocide Treatment
For algae, moss and lichen. Applied after cleaning it can help slow regrowth. Protection lasts up to 12–24 months, per manufacturer guidance, and is quoted as an optional extra.
Specialist Chemical-Assisted Cleaning
Severe carbon and pollution staining can sit too deep for steam alone. On suitable brickwork, trained operators use professional acid-based systems, including hydrofluoric-based cleaners, under tightly controlled conditions with test patches, neutralising and thorough rinsing.
We do not use aggressive acid on soft old brick or lime mortar, and we will tell you if a wall is not suitable.

Historic brick, natural stone and period masonry need a particularly careful approach.

Cleaning is carried out with DOFF steam at low pressure, with test areas used before wider treatment. Any additional treatment is chosen to suit the masonry and used only where needed.

Every job starts with a low pressure steam clean. That's the service. Anything beyond it, such as treating a specific stain or protecting the surface against regrowth, is optional and quoted separately, so you only pay for what you want.
Survey and Test Patch
We assess the surface, its condition and any previous coatings, then test a small area first. That confirms the right settings before we clean the whole surface.
DOFF Steam Clean
DOFF uses low-pressure steam and superheated water to lift dirt, algae, moss and staining without abrasives. It suits sensitive masonry where a controlled process matters.
Stain Treatment (Optional)
Only where you want a specific problem treated, such as carbon, rust, soot or efflorescence staining. We choose a treatment to suit your surface and quote it separately as an extra.
Final Inspection & Aftercare
As part of the aftercare, once the surface is clean, we can apply a biocide and leave it on to help stop algae and general growth returning. Protection lasts up to 12-24 months, per manufacturer guidance. Quoted separately as an optional extra.
What Affects the Price of Brick Cleaning?
Brick cleaning is normally priced by the square metre. The figure depends on how much brickwork needs cleaning, the type and condition of the brick and mortar, how heavily it is stained, the method needed, the height of the building and how we reach it, and whether water and power are available on site.
